Professional Document Revision

In this project, you will revise one of the texts you analyzed in the analyzing writing practices project and justify your revisions. (If it's a long document, you can revise a smaller portion of it, with instructor approval.)To do this, you'll build on the document analysis you did in the AWP project as well as through learning about and applying ideas related to shaping writing for particular contexts and general principles of writing and document design.

Purpose of this project

This project will allow you to learn more about revising documents, shaping writing in particular contexts, and applying principles in practice. It aligns with the following course goals: Writing in Context, Writing Process, Technology, and Document Design.

Process and Products

This project will be done in several stages. Further information about the activities you'll be expected to do in class and outside of class will be available on the course calendar, so make sure to check it frequently to keep up with the process.

  • First, you'll do some reading about revision and shaping texts for readers and consider what you might want to revise about your document in order to make it the best possible match for your readers.
  • Second, you'll create a list of possible revisions for your document. You'll document these revisions in a memo to me, due on Monday, September 23.
  • Third, you'll draft a revision of your document. This revision, along with a copy of the original document, is due on Wednesday, October 9.
  • Finally, after class discussion and instructor feedback, you'll revise your document one last time and turn a printed copy of the final draft (including copies of or pointers to the original document and your first draft) on Monday, October 14.
